When walking the length of the river, a series of portraits developed of the people I met and spoke to. Through conversation and making a photograph together, we shared a moment in time to reflect and connect by the water. From Leamouth to Hartford, I have walked through urban development, industry, and marshes, as the river ecology of the Lea continuously shifts and changes along its waterways. I have recorded signs and conditions of access, ownership, and land use through photographing the landscape. I am interested in the varied relationships individuals and communities have built with the waters and land in the Lea Valley. Ongoing photographic experiments record thriving life, underwater and on land. Research materials of water pollution, enclosures along the Lea, and collective resistance in relation to them range from satellite imagery, archive materials and text sources. &nbsp; <img width="850" 13:20:28 +0000 Tamara Rabea Stoll https://tamararabea.com/Ridley-Road-Market Ridley Road Market Self-published, 2019Ridley Road Market has been serving the diverse communities of Dalston in East London since the 1880s. Sociologist Sophie Watson describes the market as a “hub of connection, interconnections and social interaction”. This work was developed during a seven-year engagement with Ridley Road in Hackney, East London in which I switched roles between photographer, market trader and oral historian. Weaving together my own photographs with archival materials, personal narratives of traders and customers, newspaper cuttings and a series of postcards, this book explores the street’s social and material fabric and attempts a collective writing of the many histories that have unfolded on this street. During this project, I ran a market stall trading photo postcards for oral histories of the market. This public intervention provided a space where traders and local people considered the past, present and future of the market. Recorded and worked into the pages of this book, the multitude of voices address threats such as gentrification and marginalisation, but also collectively constitute Ridley Road as a precious cultural and social space. The publications’ materials are sequenced geographically; narratives - in words and photographs - coexist and complement each other. Throughout the contents of this book, I linked my photographs, archival materials and texts with a footnote index system. A set of newspaper cuttings from the early 1960s of attempts by fascist groups to take over Ridley Road testify the strong resistance and unity of the local community. Over 200 people have contributed and supported this project by sharing their personal photographs and stories. Hackney Archives and Rio Cinema Archive kindly allowed the use of their archival photographs. “Ridley Road Market” was self-published with the help of a crowdfunding campaign in 2019. I returned copies of the book to the market where they have been available for sale at Party Party, 9-13 Ridley Road, in support of the Save Ridley Road campaign. She writes: “After going to protests for many years, I began bringing my camera in 2015 to document these moments of collective action and grassroots organising. For the past ten years I have photographed protests—mainly in London— standing alongside the groups and movements I document. It has been powerful to participate in and document protests that have achieved both small and significant political change. Yet many of the same issues persist, year after year. This ongoing resistance highlights the strength and perseverance of communities standing up for their rights.”&nbsp; The zine was developed with Angela and published through Road Less Travelled Press in September 2025, building on years of friendship, collaboration, and a shared commitment to protest photography. We hope that the photographs can continue to serve as a form of protest and support individuals and groups in educational contexts, libraries, archives, community spaces, and campaigns—or simply be shared as a reminder that we were there: holding a banner, taking action, demanding change.&nbsp; A historical record of powerful moments of protest—a physical copy to keep, share, and reflect upon. The sister publication ‘Follow y/our river: a manual for deep mapping in the Lower Lea Valley,’ is a guide that paula and I created for the Photography program at London South Bank University where we teach. Our students were invited to conduct fieldwork along the river Lea using transdisciplinary approaches such as photographic, geographical, ecological, and experiential methods.Supported by: School of Arts and Creative Industries / Centre for the Study of the Networked Image, London South Bank University In the autumn of 2022, four years since our initial meeting at the River Lea Bow Locks where msdm publications studio was situated, paula, hḗrā, I embarked on a self-initiated artist residency along the Lea Valley. During this period, we engaged in dialogue, explored new research and formed connections along the fluid geography of the Lea Valley. Its timeline spans from ancient water sources and industrial waterways to contemporary urban hydro-spectacles, reflecting humanity’s changing relationship with water over time, from a deity to a resource, from common use to private commodity. hḗrā and paula worked on inscribing rituals for transitory states of being into the landscape of the Lower Lea Valley. Through making publications together, my aim was to generate and circulate small-scale publications exploring narratives of individual and collective agency in public spaces. The street as a site of care, common ground, public assembly, and collective resistance had been crucial in previous collaborations and publications I had been involved in. Road Less Travelled Press has been a framework to learn as a group and explore personal narratives in this context. My starting point was an invitation to people I have been active with, friends and collaborators, to share their experiences of agency in the public—from acts of care and resistance in the everyday to organised forms of protest and direct action. The first publication, Road Less Travelled Volume One, was initiated through an invitation in the form of an email, which led to the contributions of 23 people in various formats—photographs, words, videos, sound files, and printed matter. The contributions were developed through email exchanges, conversations, walks, co-authorship, and group editing in a shared online document. Designer Rose Nordin and I met regularly, sharing ideas and working on the publication layout. Jordan Taylor of Riso Printers, PageMasters, printed the cover and inserts.In February 2022, some of the contributors joined me at my work space at Ridley Road Studios to print, collate, and bind Volume 1. This shift to small-scale and hands-on production gave space to a publication-making process in which we discussed the experiences and perspectives that were shared throughout the publication while we msdm publications, 2022 Road Less Travelled Press’ participation in the Collective Publishing programme in May 2022 at Borough Road Gallery took the form of a workshop, in which people were invited to collate and bind both publications for themselves and for others, to then circulate them through their networks. Publications were sent to people who had, in different ways, supported or participated in the process. Altogether, 250 copies were printed and bound. The publications were also circulated through street libraries across London, a mobile library, as well as deposited in small, independent, and some institutional libraries. Volume 0 developed simultaneously with Volume 1, and fragments on both covers link to the 23 contributions, taking interconnectedness as a starting point for these two and future publications. Both volumes act as invitations for future collaborations for their readers. Volume 0 was produced over a short space of time for the Collective Publishing Event in May 2022 and was made in response to the Police Crime Sentencing and Courts Bill (PCSC) receiving royal assent on April 28, 2022, and thus becoming law. The publication begins with a newspaper cutting of ‘The Silent March’, a 1962 march by a group of teenagers walking from Ridley Road to the Houses of Parliament in silence. A series of photographs retracing the young protesters’ steps is followed by a group of photographs of the Kill the Bill protests in 2021–22, a response to the criminalising of protest through the PCSC Bill. In the centre of the publication is a list of the over 150 groups of the Kill the Bill coalition and information on Part 3 of the PCSC Act, which includes noise-based restrictions to protest, giving I searched archives for historical materials, finding very little.* Mary Benedetta writes about the market in 'The Street Markets of London’ published in 1936. A series of early 20th century London street market postcards, found elsewhere, echoes her writing, however there were none of Ridley Road. In the summer of 2017, I produced a set of 10 Ridley Road Postcards with photographs taken and donated by traders, local photographers and customers. Some photographs were found online. The oldest photograph was taken in the early 20th century and the most recent 10 years ago.&nbsp; I set up a market stall, swapping postcards for stories. Workshop collaboration with Mo Zaboli and Bernadette Keating, Robert Kunstmann &amp; Zaroon Mohammad for the exhibition ‘Im_Mobilities’ at Galerie KUB, Leipzig, curated by Juana Awad, Julia Eckert &amp; Nada Schroer, installation design by Paula Gehrmann, 2017 ‘Investigating Invisible Borders’ was designed as a workshop in 2017 to investigate the (administrative) city border which marks Leipzig’s ‘obligatory residency for people with refugee status’ (Residenzpflicht). These geographical boundaries restrict freedom of movement and choice of residence. As a group - some with refugee and migrant backgrounds, others born in Germany - we explored and enacted notions of borders, movement and in/visibility. Through a series of creative methods we shared associations and developed ideas, then walked, documented and overstepped the geographic city border. Making it visible through our photographs and actions, the outcome was collectively edited and worked into an installation at the exhibition ‘Im_Mobilities' at KUB Gallery, Leipzig. <img width="883" publication have in the past or currently face the threat of redevelopment. At the beginning of 2017, James Lander and I invited collaborators for five conversation-led walks between two estates at a time. We looked for input from architecture to activism, from anthropology to art. We made connections between different experiences, perspectives and areas of expertise on social housing in London today.
